PENETROL PRODUCTS FOR THE SHIPPING INDUSTRY

Why Penetrol?
Penetrol clear penetrating oil is the basis of all other Penetrol products. No other oil we have found has the comparable combined properties of this unique oil. Penetrol oil incorporates extreme penetration properties of more than three times better than water, with a solids content equal or higher than that of many paints and primers.

The main task of Penetrol is the saturation of porous substrates, such as rusted and corroded surfaces.

TO STOP RUST AND CONTROL FORMATION OF NEW RUST TO BE MIXED INTO OIL AND ALKYD BASED PAINT, VARNISHES AND STAINS TO ELIMINATE IN MANY CASES SAND BLASTING AND HIGH DRY DOCK CHARGES

How Does Penetrol Stop Rust
The penetrating and adhesive qualities of Penetrol shut out air and moisture, the cause of corrosion and the food rust needs to grow.

Rusty iron and steel surfaces have a spongy layer of porous iron oxide particles, the result of chemical and electrolytic actions, which have destroyed the true substance of the metal. This spongy surface soaks up and traps the corrosive substance of moisture and air, which constantly eats deeper and deeper into the metal.

Penetrol quickly wets any surface to which it is applied. This wetting action spreads in all directions, especially downward. Its unique power of penetration carries it into, through and around the deepest and most finely granulated particles of rust. Penetrol displaces air and moisture and incorporates the rust into a waterproof protective coating - an ideal foundation for paint.

OVER THE LAST 60 YEARS PENETROL PRODUCTS HAVE BEEN PROVEN ON A MULTITUDE OF PROJECTS THROUGHOUT THE WORLD AND HAVE SAVED MILLIONS IN EVERY CURRENCY WHERE PAINT IS APPLIED FOR MAINTENANCE PURPOSES, AS WELL AS MAKING THE MAINTENANCE ENGINEER'S AND THE PAINTER'S DAY CONSIDERABLY EASIER.

Penetrol Products For The Shipping Industry

The Flood Company and their agents offer five basic products for the shipping industry, which are effective, economical and easy to apply by the crew during a voyage, thereby eliminating costly off hire or dry-docking. Each of our products has a strong de-scaling action, which makes it unnecessary to sandblast. Based on a highly fluent and deeply penetrating 'creeping' action and aided by the vessel's vibration they loosen rust scale during a ship's voyage and protect the surface from further scale build-up.

The five products are:

· PAS (OAS) Penetrol Aluminium Stain - for cargo holds and below decks
· RLS Read Lead Stain - for ballast tanks and above the water line
· CIP All Purpose Primer (lead free RLS) - for ballast tanks and above the water line
· ROS Red Oxide Stain - for cargo holds and below decks
· PDZ (ODZ) Danger Zone for LPG Tanks - for LPG tanks

PAS Penetrol Aluminium Stain
PAS is the most popular as it gives an instant lift in the appearance of a hold whilst de-scaling at the same time. It adds brightness and makes it easy to pass inspection. It is certified for grain carriage. Also used in engine rooms, walkways and under deck, it is the preferred product for cargo holds. Attractive Bright Silver finish.

RLS Read Lead Stain
RLS is specially designed for ballast and wing tanks. De Norshe Veritas certified it gives an acceptable life of 2 to 4 years depending on conditions. It is a very hard coating and can be over-coated with any paint including expoxies if so desired. Orange colour.

CIP All Purpose Primer
CIP has similar characteristics as RLS and is Lead Free to comply with the new regulations coming into force in many countries. Recommended for ballast tanks it is not quite as hard as RLS and needs longer curing if it is to be over-coated. Light brown colour.

ROS Red Oxide Stain
ROS has excellent de-scaling properties with a dark brown oxide colour. Whilst having similar characteristics to PAS it does not have the pleasing appearance. It is recommended for holds in very bad shape with severe rust problems. As soon as the de-scaling is completed the coating should be changed to PAS.

PDZ Danger Zone
PDZ Danger Zone is specially formulated for LPG tanks. It allows for easy detection of even the finest hairline cracks and meets SOLAS and Class Society Rules.

Eurasia prefers PAS and ROS. The former for Grain and the latter for Pet Coke. Other ship owners, especially in Scandinavia like RLS but regulations will make it harder for that product in the future and in due course it will be phased out. CIP is a suitable substitute and ahead of anything else offered in the market at present.

The general method of use is to apply one saturating coat to all rusted surfaces. As the scale falls off during the next voyage within 2 to 3 months these areas should be treated again and in due course after 2 to 3 voyages all scale treated will have gone. Then it is just a matter to re-coat any damaged areas to keep the surface in good condition. Very seldom do owners top coat our products unless specified.

What Product Should You Use???

Some owners prefer PAS and ROS for .....
· Ease of application. No special equipment or safety measures required.
· Cost-effective. No dry docking, off hire, sand blasting, special equipment.
· Easy repair of damage by just touching up.
· None of the products will ever peel, crack or blister.
· Can be sprayed up to 15m high with special gun. No scaffolding needed.

A COST COMPARISION ESTIMATE USING PENETROL MARINE PRODUCTS

Cost Savings on maintaining a 45000-Ton bulk carrier's cargo holds over an 8 year period with Penetrol products after initial de-scaling has been accomplished

Estimated costs are based on experience and today's labour and material costs using a dockyard in China for all systems other than Penetrol. We have made no provision in increases in shipyard or dry docking or outside labour cost.

The Penetrol System USD 300.000
Conventional Paint System USD 500.000+
Epoxy System USD 900.000+
Glass Flake System USD 1,000.000+

The above figures speak for themselves.

To sum up, Penetrol is the easiest and most economical system to maintain. It will also look nicer than anything else will, as regular touch-up maintenance will keep the appearance of the holds in excellent condition, which is what most owners want.

This overview touches only briefly on the properties of the products mentioned and more detailed information on any particular product is readily obtainable on request. Individual case studies are also available.

All Penetrol products are available ex ports East and West Coast USA, East Coast Australia, Singapore, Rotterdam, Oslo, Algeciras and Limasol as well as in many other ports worldwide at short notice.
