What causes rust? Rust needs air and moisture to grow. Take one of these away and you eliminate rust. Marine Penetrol is a contact oil with three times the penetration power of water. It spreads into and over the steel surface preventing contact with air and moisture. On existing corrosion Marine Penetrol penetrates through the rust to the bare steel and fills even the most minute pores, again completely driving out all air and moisture and making use of the iron hydroxide pigment (rust) to form a protective coating ready for painting.

Imagine rust as a common household sponge. If such a sponge would be completely saturated with a water proofing drying oil it would be worthless since it could not absorb any water. This is what Marine Penetrol does to rust - it changes rust from a porous water absorbing material into one that is non-porous and water resistant.
